There are a number of objects, furniture and machinery that populate the parallel universe of hotels. Gideon Bibles, trouser-presses, mini toiletries, card keys. And just outside your room, in the corridor, lives the shoe shine machine. Yes, the one you would never dream of using in your everyday life, but can’t resist testing out – even if you’re wearing Converse and the exercise is quite pointless.
Next time you do, listen out for the individual tones the different bristled brushes create against your feet (my favourite is the buffing brush). And check out its very long decay – as long as the machine sound in action itself!, punctuated by the rattle of the brushes as they clank back to their resting position.
And now head down to breakfast before the croissants disappear.
